TMJ – Neuromuscular Dentistry

If you suffer from “incurable” headache pain, it may be caused by an incorrect bite, spasms from the muscles that surround the neck or head or from your jaw joints. Headaches are just one of the many symptoms of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, problems that occur when the jaw joints are not normal. Other symptoms of TMJ may include worn teeth, painful muscles, pain behind the eyes, stiffness in the shoulders and neck, sensitive teeth, tingling of the hands and fingers, fainting and dizziness, ringing in the ears, jaw pain, earaches, difficulty closing and opening the mouth and clicking or popping in the jaw joint.

Instead of just treating these symptoms temporarily with pain medications or muscle relaxants, we believe it is necessary to eliminate the symptoms by treating the cause of the disorder. At Alexandria Dental Care, we address the jaw joint factors that cause the pain and restore proper functioning so that your overall health improves.

Why Dentistry?
The symptoms of TMJ disorders may mimic other disorders, and people often go from specialist to specialist in search of answers and relief.

The jaw is just part of the skeletal chain. When your bite is imperfect, the muscles of the jaw and face become tense. The muscles can also be affected by accidental injury or trauma that lead to chronic muscle pain and spasms. These symptoms are often subject to misdiagnosis because they present as referred pain in different areas of the body. For example, TMJ disorders can cause tingling in the hands and fingers or ringing in the ears. Seeing a specialist that focuses on these parts of the body will not treat the cause because it lies elsewhere. Only a professional specializing in neuromuscular dentistry can fully treat TMJ disorders because only they can address the root cause of the issue – your jaw.
